Mapleton is a city in Utah County, part of the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Area, first settled in 1850 as an agricultural extension of Springville — originally known as Union Bench. Incorporated in 1948 after charting its own course from Springville beginning in 1901, Mapleton has carefully preserved its semi-rural character even as development has transformed neighboring communities. The city sits east of Interstate 15 along U.S. Route 89, and that separation from the freeway has been a key factor in keeping Mapleton more rural and spacious than Springville and Spanish Fork to the south. Lot sizes throughout the city are notably generous, with minimums typically ranging from one-third acre to two acres, and the city actively uses innovative planning tools including Transferable Development Rights to protect the foothills from overdevelopment.
